Preparing to apply
Fellowships are awarded through competitive calls for applications and granted to the fellow personally. Before starting the application process, familiarise yourself with the key criteria.
Know your eligibility
Applicants must be qualified for admission to a PhD program in Denmark under either the 5+3 model or the 4+4 model. In general, DARA PhD Fellowships are open to all qualified candidates, regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, nationality, or religion.
Consider your preferred call
DARA operates with two types of fellowships: Open, supporting any projects fitting into the scientific span of the academy, and Thematic, supporting projects within a specific scientific area defined by DARA. Each call defines the themes prioritized in the given application round. Should you fit within the framework of a theme, we suggest applying for a fellowship within the given theme.
engage a
supervisor
Candidates must have an agreement with a principal supervisor, holding a position of associate professor, professor, or equivalent at a research institution in the Danish Kingdom, including Greenland and Faroe Islands. It is the responsibility of applicants to identify and secure a principal supervisor.
Secure supplementary funding
DARA provides funding to cover most of the salary, tuition fees and scientific travels, as well as a contribution towards host institution expenses. It relies on the host institution to warrant that the remaining funding for salary, tuition fee and running costs are in place.
Collect your documentation
As part of the fellowship application, you must have the following documents in place
- Admission and co-funding letter from Head of Department
- Academic Transcripts
- Budget approved by your host institution
Attend the online information session
An online information session is provided for as part of every DARA Fellowship Application round and are available on the call card.
